Courtyard Camp

  • Hermann-Grima House 820 Saint Louis Street New Orleans, LA, 70112 United States (map)

Courtyard Camp 2020 will run Monday, August 3rd through Friday, August 7th. Camp begins at 9 AM and ends at 3 PM with optional before care (8:30-9 AM) and aftercare (3-4 PM) for an additional price. This camp is designed for children ages 7 to 12 years old.

Our Courtyard Camp explores 19th century life in New Orleans through crafts, games, and project-based learning. Campers ages 7-12 gain a better understanding of the past during our Aug. 3rd-7th camp by exploring two Historic Houses in the French Quarter, watching an cooking an open-hearth cooking demonstration, making 19th century home remedies, and writing and performing their own scripts set in post-bellum New Orleans.

Because of its rich history and culture, New Orleans is a great place for summer camps because young people can explore fields in the humanities, architecture, and culinary arts in a way that builds their knowledge of the culture yet exposes them to possible fields early on.

Project-based learning is an important aspect to building critical thinking skills. As the campers work in groups for the various games and activities related to cooking or exploring the themes of the homes, they are using problem solving and communication skills for a goal larger than themselves. Since the focus of the camp would largely be learning of 19th century living, they will consistently be engrossed in learning that is connected to something real and practical. When learning is done through experience and hands-on approaches, the campers will come away with critical thinking skills gained from activities with a real-world focus.

The classes will be taught by the Director of Educational Programming, the Curator, docents, and experts/practitioners in various specialty areas.

For this camp the activities will focus on the following areas:

·      Career Exposure

·      Art

·      Cooking

·      Horticulture
