VOLUNTEER TRAINING

Training

Our training program introduces you to the history of our National Historic Landmark properties and 19th-century New Orleans. The training is easy, educational, and fun and is offered throughout the year.

Step 1
Orientation is designed to introduce new volunteers to our institution, our Education Department staff, and our volunteer program.

Step 2
Training involves six meetings to be taken one morning per week.  The course provides an overview of New Orleans history.  Topics include the families of the Hermann-Grima and Gallier Historic Houses and African Americans in New Orleans, as well as a field trip to another historic site.

Step 3: House Docents
Independent Study entails studying the guidebook and following experienced docents on tours.  Through the use of our printed guide materials and library, as well as interaction with our trained volunteers and staff, you will soon learn the information needed to begin meeting with museum visitors.

Step 3: Cooking Docents & Living History Docents
A combination of Independent Study and Apprenticeship completes training for those interested in conducting demonstrations.  A guidebook will be provided, and it is important for the docents-in-training to participate in demonstrations with experienced docents.
