The Hermann-Grima (1831) and Gallier (1860) Historic Houses provide our community with a valuable glimpse into the rich cultural history of New Orleans. Together, they serve as a great opportunity for visitors to learn the history and culture of people living in the city during the 19th century. These meticulously restored homes provide an historically accurate backdrop, against which volunteers and staff present the details of the lives of real people. It is a story as ordinary as cooking cornbread and as spectacular as grand soirees with fireworks and music. It is a story of trade merchants, lawyers, and architects, of slaves and house servants, of yellow fever epidemics and steamboats, of mourning customs and courting rituals. By learning about the past, we are certain that our volunteers and visitors come away from their experience with a deeper appreciation for the present. |
To tell this unique story, we need your help. Your first step is as easy as contacting us to let us know you are interested. Please Contact Us today. |

Types of Volunteers
House Docents
Independent Study entails studying the guidebook and following experienced docents on tours. Through the use of our printed guide materials and library, as well as interaction with our trained volunteers and staff, you will soon learn the information needed to begin meeting with museum visitors.
Cooking Docents & Living History Docents
A combination of Independent Study and Apprenticeship completes training for those interested in conducting demonstrations. A guidebook will be provided, and it is important for the docents-in-training to participate in demonstrations with experienced docents.
