The wash room was used as a scullery, where the slaves washed kitchen utensils and pots. The wash room also functioned as an auxiliary kitchen where chopping and food preparation was handled.
The set kettle served as the original hot water heater. A fire was built underneath and vented into the main hearth chimney in the kitchen next door. Once the water was heated, it had to be bailed out into a bucket or a sink for dishwashing.
