The storage pantry held staples, such as sugar, flour, salt, rice, and cornmeal, expensive or luxury items, such as spices, teas, and candles, and dangerous items, such as poisons and medicines.  Because of the variety of items stored in this space, the door was kept locked, and access was limited. Often, the mistress of the house kept the key and gave out provisions, as needed.
