GH Children's Room

It was not unusual in the 19th century for several children to share a room or a bed. At different times during the Gallier family's residence, two or more of the Gallier daughters would have shared the children's room.  Mr. and Mrs. Gallier had four daughters, all of whom grew up in the Gallier House. They were Elizabeth Leonie (1853-1924), Josephine Blanche (1856-1933), Françoise Josephine (1858-1909), and Jeanne Clemence (1860-1941).  As was often the case in the 19th century, all were called by their middle names.

Nineteenth-century toys were somewhat different from today’s playthings.  Wood, cloth, porcelain, and metals were the only materials available, and toys were often meant to help prepare children for the roles they would have as adults.  Many 19th-century toys were designed as small-scale versions of objects used by adults.
