Some of the best camping memories are made sitting around a campfire – or camp stove – eating a meal you’ve prepared outdoors.
This badge program provides the girls an opportunity to experience first-hand how to cook in an early 19th century kitchen. Though some parts of this badge are meant to be done in a camp setting, many of the activities can be done in the Hermann-Grima House kitchen. The troop can learn about the history of food and how it was once prepared.
Activities completed in the Hermann-Grima/Gallier Historic Houses Workshop:
Bon Appetit – With a group, help plan, prepare, and serve an outdoor meal. Help do at least one of the following: plan the menu, make shopping and equipment lists, shop, pack, take care of food at the site, prepare and serve food, or clean up.
Bean There, Done That * – Find three recipes that use a common food such as beans, rice, or potatoes. Prepare at least one of those recipes during a cookout. Save the other recipes.
Cook It – Find out how to use at least two of the following different cooking methods:
1. propane stove
2. butane stove
3. gas stove
4. charcoal
5. canned heat
6. solar energy
Don’t Let the Fire Go Out – Show your ability to maintain a cooking fire in windy or wet weather.
Keep It Clean – Take a lead role in the clean-up process. Show that you can do two of the following:
1. Put out a fire.
2. Remove the ashes.
3. Wash, sanitize, and store the dishes.
4. Dispose of the trash, wet garbage, tin cans, and glass without endangering or damaging the environment.
All Dried Up – Sun-dry or oven-dry some fresh fruit, vegetables, or seasonings.
